Iruma

Our next stop was Iruma, North-west of Tokyo center. What makes this base interesting is not only the good visibility, but also the variety of aircraft based here. 402 Hikotai with the C-1, but also Special Airlift Group with its flight check squadron operating the YS-11FC. Electric Warfare Operation Group also based here with the YS-11AE and EB.

We started the day at place spot 1, especially good when runway 17 is in use for takeoff, which was not the case. So later we moved the place spot 2, a park with good landing view when runway 35 is in use.

Later during the day, afternoon, we moved to place spot 3. To get here, you need to access through a residential area, so be aware parking the car. It gives excellent views of aircraft taxing towards runway 17.

Tokorozawa museum

As traffic was slow at Iruma, we decided the visit the place Museum at Tokorozawa in between and then head back to Iruma. Nice detail was that we asked the secret service guys, keeping an eye on use, to program our navigation system (Japanese only), to get to the museum. The museum is nearby and offers a big hangar with a small collection of army helicopters and a T-1.

The ANK YS-11 can be found in front of the Koku-Koen railway station, one block across the road from the museum.

Atsugi

The next day, we headed South-west of Tokyo. As the weather wasn’t great we stayed at Atsugi for the majority of the day. Atsugi is a Naval Air Station which has three squadrons flying P-3s, SH-60s and C-130s. Currently the P-1, which was still non-existent during out visit, from 3 Kokutai is also based here. Rare is the UP-3C, which we were lucky to catch during the day.

What makes this base also worthwhile is the fact that it’s the biggest USN air base in the pacific. F-18s from VFA-27, 102, 115, and 195 were active during our visit. Also a C-9 and E-2s were noted.

As runway 19 was in use, we stayed at a place road next to the Sotetsu railway line, together with lots of local spotters.

Tokyo Haneda

Nearing the end of our trip we headed for Tokyo center. Last two objective were Tokyo’s two main civil airports: Haneda and Narita. First stop was Haneda, mainly used by domestic airlines. We stared at the parking garage P1 which gives good views of the Southern apron. Two former JAS A300s were parked here, one still with titles applied.

Terminal 1

We moved to the place observation area on Terminal 1. A big terrace which covers most of Terminal 1. At the end no fences, so unobstructed viewing of both runways is possible.
